Strengthen Communication and Emotional Intimacy

Couple sitting back-to-back on a couch, appearing distant.

Couples Counseling

Relationships can become difficult for many reasons. Communication may feel impossible, conflict may happen more often than connection, or you may simply feel like you and your partner have grown apart.

At Oak River Counseling, we help couples understand the patterns that are creating conflict and develop practical skills to communicate, reconnect, and move forward together.

Couples counseling is not about choosing sides. It’s about helping both partners understand each other, address the issues affecting the relationship, and create meaningful change.

What We Help Couples With

Our therapists work with couples experiencing a wide range of relationship concerns, including:

  • Communication difficulties — Frequent arguments, misunderstandings, defensiveness, or difficulty expressing needs
  • Trust and betrayal — Working through broken trust, infidelity, or other relationship injuries
  • Recurring conflict — Feeling like you keep having the same argument without resolving anything
  • Emotional disconnection — Feeling more like roommates than partners
  • Parenting disagreements — Different parenting styles, discipline disagreements, or difficulty balancing family responsibilities
  • Major life changes — Adjusting to marriage, children, career changes, relocation, financial stress, or other transitions
  • Blended family challenges — Navigating stepfamily relationships, boundaries, parenting roles, and expectations
  • Intimacy concerns — Difficulties with emotional or physical connection
  • Past experiences affecting the relationship — Unresolved experiences that continue to influence how you relate to one another
  • Premarital concerns — Building communication, conflict-resolution, and relationship skills before marriage

If you don't see your particular concern listed, that doesn't mean couples counseling isn't appropriate. Every relationship is different, and treatment is tailored to your specific needs and goals.

Why Choose 90-Minute or 120-Minute Couples Sessions?

Couples counseling often involves more than simply talking about what happened during the week.

There may be multiple perspectives to understand, patterns to identify, and new communication skills to practice. Our 90-minute sessions and 120-Minute sessions provide additional time to move beyond surface-level discussion and work more intentionally on the relationship.

Longer sessions can allow you to:

Get to the heart of the problem.
Instead of spending most of the appointment catching up, there is more time to identify the underlying patterns contributing to conflict.

Practice new skills together.
Your therapist may help you practice communication, listening, emotional regulation, problem-solving, or conflict-resolution techniques during the session.

Address more than one issue.
Relationships rarely have just one challenge. Additional time allows your therapist to work with the broader picture.

Leave with practical tools.
The goal isn't simply to talk about your relationship. It's to help you develop skills that you can use outside of therapy.

Our Approach

At Oak River Counseling, our couples work incorporates evidence-based relationship techniques and individualized clinical approaches.

Your therapist will consider your unique relationship, communication patterns, concerns, strengths, and goals when determining how to approach treatment.

Depending on your needs, sessions may focus on:

  • Improving communication
  • Understanding emotional needs
  • Identifying unhealthy relationship patterns
  • Learning healthier ways to manage conflict
  • Rebuilding trust
  • Strengthening emotional connection
  • Developing problem-solving skills
  • Improving boundaries
  • Navigating parenting and family concerns
  • Reconnecting as partners
  • Preparing for major relationship transitions

Our goal is not to give you a one-size-fits-all formula for your relationship. We work with you to identify what is getting in the way of a healthy relationship and develop strategies that fit your situation.

What Can You Expect?

Your First Session

The first session is an opportunity for your therapist to understand your relationship and what brought you to counseling.

You may discuss your relationship history, current concerns, communication patterns, previous attempts to resolve the problem, and what you hope to accomplish through counseling.

From there, your therapist can help develop a treatment approach based on your specific needs. Following your first session, your therapist may provide a Gottman Relationship Checkup assessment. This comprehensive questionnaire helps identify relationship strengths and areas that may benefit from additional attention, allowing your therapist to better tailor counseling to your unique needs

Ongoing Sessions

As counseling continues, sessions may involve identifying relationship patterns, learning and practicing new communication skills, working through conflict, addressing trust concerns, or developing strategies for specific challenges.

You may also receive exercises or skills to practice between sessions.

The Goal

The goal of couples counseling is to help you and your partner develop the skills and understanding needed to navigate challenges more effectively.

For some couples, that means rebuilding connection and strengthening the relationship. For others, it may mean gaining clarity about the future of the relationship.

Our goal is to help you make meaningful progress—not keep you in counseling indefinitely.

Premarital Therapy

Marriage is one of the most meaningful commitments you will make — and preparing for it intentionally can make all the difference.

Premarital counseling at Oak River Counseling is designed to help engaged and seriously dating couples build a strong, healthy foundation before saying “I do.” Rather than waiting for problems to surface later, we help couples address important topics early in a supportive, structured environment.

Our premarital counseling services (available in Enterprise, Ozark, and via telehealth throughout Alabama) focus on:

  • Communication styles and conflict resolution

  • Financial conversations and shared goals

  • Expectations around roles and responsibilities

  • Family dynamics and boundaries

  • Intimacy and emotional connection

  • Long-term vision and values

Using evidence-based relationship principles and structured assessments, we help couples gain deeper insight into strengths and growth areas. You will walk away with practical tools you can use for years to come — not just for the wedding day, but for the marriage that follows. Premarital counseling is not about fixing problems.
It is about building confidence, clarity, and connection before stepping into lifelong commitment. Starting strong matters. We’re here to help you do just that.
